Continuity In Films
Film Continuity
Continuity editing is essentially a magic trick. It is about creating something that isn't real, whilst also suspending the audiences disbelief.
Continuity editing effects the pacing and trajectory of the story. Bad continuity effects the audiences understanding of what is happening in the scene.
A big part of getting continuity correct is keeping track of left and right so that the visuals look right.
Match On Action
Match on action refers to film editing and video editing technique where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action. Although the two shots may have actually been shot hours apart from each other, cutting on action gives the impression of continuous time when watching the edited film. It is a form of continuity editing.
180 Rule
In film making, the 180 rule is a basic guideline that states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line. The new shot, from the opposite side is known as a reverse angle.
